The annual training weekend will shortly be upon us. There is a whirlwind of activities going on to get ready. Bill has been working hard pulling together what we expect to be another great training program along with the rest of the training staff. Dick has met with our friends at Kittatinny and Cedar Rapids to once again to get permission to use there facilities; he has also contacted the Shohola Township to let them know that we would be training so if a  911 call comes in, “ People are in the river “, they will know about it. NPS’s Joe Nicholson will talk with the land owners along Shohola Rapids about our training to ensure they are not surprised. Ingrid of the National Park Service and Mary K are coordinating the Saturday lunch. DJ and Troy have arranged the annual training weekend dinner and getting tables and tents for the command center.  We’ve restocked our NCSP supplies for sales.  Need a new shirt or throw bag? We’ve got them.  These are just a few of the preparatory activities; many other members are also hard at work.

So it is time for all of us to get ready for the up coming training weekend and season too. I have signed up for my annual CPR and First Aid classes with the American Red Cross, took equipment out of the garage and attic, ordered some more stuff out of the NRS catalogue and scheduled weekends in my calendar to ensure I can be on the river at least 4 days. I schedule many more days but can’t always make them. I do know that if I don’t schedule time on the river, others in my family or work will schedule them for me, but not on the river.

I am excited about the upcoming season. We are planning to work even closer with the National Park Service. This should help expand both our training program and theirs, leading to a safer river for everyone. I look forward to new learning during the training weekend,  in season weekend short training sessions, helping the park guests, but most of all being on the river with my friends in the NCSP.

See you soon.
