What you need for Spring Training - New Members

for New Members from Commodore Rob Post:

Welcome to NCSP—we’re glad you’re joining us!

If you’re new to river rescue and still building your gear kit, here are a few suggestions to help make Training Weekend comfortable and enjoyable:

Camping

Plan to bring a tent or other portable shelter along with your sleeping gear. Some members bring small campers as well. Be prepared for a range of conditions—it can be cold, windy, and rainy—so make sure you have what you need to stay warm and dry at night. Extras like a headlamp, camp chair, and basic cooking gear will make things more comfortable. Camping onsite is free. There are porta-pots at the campground and showers nearby.

Clothing

We’ll be outside all day. Saturday morning (through lunch) is land-based, so dress in layers and plan for changing weather. Avoid cotton—synthetic or wool layers are best. A hat and gloves may come in handy.

After lunch, we’ll transition to water work. You’ll change into a dry suit or wetsuit (we have loaners available), but you’ll need to bring your own footwear—river shoes, old sneakers, or boots all work well. Showers are available at the campground across the road after Saturday’s sessions. Sunday morning will be all water work, so plan to suit up again.

Gear

We have loaner equipment available, but if you already own a canoe or kayak, PFD, paddle, helmet, or throw bag, feel free to bring it. If you’re just getting started, there’s no need to buy gear yet—you’ll get a much better sense of what you need after Training Weekend.

Food

We provide lunch on Saturday. There’s also an optional group dinner Saturday evening ($40/person) at a local restaurant—it’s a great meal and a fun way to connect with other members. For all other meals, please plan to bring your own food.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask—we’re happy to help. Looking forward to meeting you!
