I'm hosting a potluck BBQ/pool party next Sunday, August 245th, at my house. I'm having a few people stop over for a Sunday Funday before the pool closes in a few weeks. You're welcome to camp in my backyard, Rain or shine, with indoor plumbing 😁 there is not a ton of parking unless I arrange it in advance with my neighbor, so RSVP. I'm located about an hour southwest of Zane Grey at 43 Glenwood Road, Pine Island, New York. Please text me your RSVP TO 845-258-8066
Sherri and I were tossing around the idea yesterday about kayaking before the barbecue Sunday on the Wallkill River, which is just on the other side of the mountain for me, a nine-minute drive. I'm planning on patrolling on Saturday, and then on Sunday morning, we could do a caravan from camp right to the river access. (about 1 hr drive south) We would probably launch at about 10 AM from the winding Waters Trail access on the Walkill River for those who may only be available for Sunday. Anyone who doesn't want to kayak can hike either that trail or the Liberty Loop trail, which is part of the Walkhill River Wildlife Refuge area. These are both flat, easy hikes.
The Walkill River flows north, so we will be heading against the current south into New Jersey, but it's a negligible current. You can't even feel it. It's a beautiful winding river very scenic flatwater for the most part. I haven't been out there this year, so I don't know if any trees are down or obstructions to worry about. I'm unsure if I'll be able to scout beforehand, so that's just a chance we'll take. There is one tiny portage area about 2 miles in to get around a little dam with a fun chute on the way back.
